PRINCESS's STORY

"The Princess Diaries" began about fourteen years ago as emails to cat loving friends. They were stories about Princess's diary, a tabby cat who was born in 1989 when I rescued her. She was about four months old. She was in tune with everything I did or even think, she always amazed me so much, I just had to write about her. After nineteen years with me, she
went to the Rainbow Bridge in August of 2008.

The house felt painfully empty after her passing. But I vowed never to replace her. In my heart, she was irreplaceable.
And then I started to see her in my dreams. Suddenly, I remembered one morning that I had seen her back in her healthy form and I was told "she is ready now". I was not sure what that really meant.

Just a couple of days later, I was led to a pet psychic by other people at an Expo event. It was an unplanned, spontaneous occurrence, I had not thought about visiting a pet psychic and did not even have a picture of her that they could use.
Princess' spirit came through the pet psychic who repeated those same words I had heard in the dream: "She is ready" .... to be born again.

How would I find her? How? She said it would be "like a Petsmart, one of those places".

I took it in stride. I still did not want to replace her with any other cat. One day, about 2 months later, I found myself suddenly making a turn off the main road into a Petco I never go to, away from my area. I felt compelled to go in even though I had no other cats to care for. I spotted an adoption fair poster in there... and I heard clearly in my heart and mind the thought that 'you've got to follow up on this - don't let it go'. I did.

I returned for the adoption fair and as I entered, I began to feel like I was in a trance.. I kept looking in cages but could not "feel it". Finally, I came to the end of the cage line and I stood motionless, staring at this tiny tabby baby sleeping on top of a larger orange fluffy kitten. She was less than 2 months old. As I stood there, contemplating my feelings, the orange kitten stood up and came to the front of the cage, reaching out to me with his paw... He let out a meow at me as he saw me take a few steps away, mulling this sight over in my mind. I turned to see this kitten holding out his paw at me, literally meowing for me to come back...

When Princess II came home with Gabriel, she was barely 2 months old. And she knew. She knew all the old tricks and phrases - and she wanted to show me exactly what she knew.
She was born in the same type of body, a tabby.

I could not tell while she was a tiny baby but she grew to have the same type of bow-legged look to her hind legs. She also carried the same fear. Princess was fearful of the scrunchy sound of plastic or paper bags all throughout her life with me, it may have been something that had happened to her in her first 4 months of life before I rescued her. She also had a herniated belly when I found her in 1989. Now this new kitten, as she grew, had a slight protruding feel on the same spot of her belly, although vets did not detect anything 'wrong' with it.

To this day, the new Princess is still fearful of scrunchy bag sounds while no other cat in the household is.
"It's time for beddie bye now", I said when she returned to the house as a two-month old - and on cue, she climbed up the stairs immediately and looked down at me from upstairs for my reaction. I was just floored ...this little kitten responded to a phrase she never heard of before. "Wanna get some 'nummy-num'?" - Yes! She ran to the bowls. This was her first time as a new kitten in the house.

It was a miracle - and we are still living it. It has been now been over 8 years later now since her new incarnation.

Sometimes, Ah Don't Know Which....

Ah am a male cat who lives in an awl-female household, awkay? And they cawl me "Gabriel".

Ah have Pipi, my girl ... she's bean with me from the beginnang. And thean, Ah have mom.. She took us, both me and Pipi when we were really young.. We knew she would be our mom, Pipi especially.. Pipi told me 'this was it'..to treat her like my mom, becoze Pipi just knew.

And so, when they both try to get mah attention? Laike if mom goes cawling me, and Pipi is trahing to get mah attention at the same time ?

Ah literally don't know which wah to go. Ah pause and look in mom's direction, then Pipi's.

.... Eet is really hard...

Wedge-Phobic

Ah sauntered as usual bah the keetchen door to spend mah time looking owt for a while. Ah had just finished dinner when Ah began to turn toward the uther wah.

And Ah saw it. Ah stood steeel, catatonic and petrified.

Whaaat EES 'dis??? There was sumeting' under the open door where it deed nawt belong!

I stood there staring at it, mesmerized... unable to move. What the HALE IS this??!!

Ah moved on and stood to look out anywah. But Ah sensed Pipi coming up behand me and Ah turned. "Pipi? be careful, there's somethang strange going awn there, bah under the door, honey.."

She took mah cue and stopped in her tracks, thanks to me. And she too, began to stalk this thang, looking perplexed down bah the door, where it meets tha floor...

[The wooden wind chime had gotten stuck under the door from the other side... and it was enough to .. spook him! LOL. And note that he did pass it on to Princess.. HOW do they communicate... She's never done that before, it was quite clear that he somehow 'told' her just by turning around and looking at each other... And then she focused at the exact spot that had spooked him out. ]

My -Revised- Reflex

Mom came home tonight and she served us dinner right away. Goog, of course, pretty much hoarded the bowl.

"Let 'er eat!", I could hear mom say. He moved and shifted to let me at it. I then, as usual, flitted away, I'm really not into gorging like he is.

I started to run, especially when I thought mom was right behind me with the scrunchy bag. But, no..

"Where are you going? You're not gonna EAT your 'nummy-num'??!!"

I stopped dead in my tracks, scrunchy-bag or no scrunchy-bag, and looked right at her, wide-eyed.

'What?', I did hear 'nummy-num' but.. oh, Googie is back there, that's right.

[The word does suddenly stop her in her tracks. ]

The Primal Cat

Pipi told me about 'deees. She said that in mom's small room upstairs, she keeps going to the basket, puts her nose down to the bottom side of it becoze it's gawt this irresistible smale. And she's bean doing 'dis over and over, even though she tales me that mom gets mad at her and keeps taling her to 'get out'.

So Ah went een there to investigate mahself. What EES 'dis smale that Pipi's talking about? Ah went straight to the spot she said it would be, and stuck mah nose to the bottom of the basket. [the small trash basket].

Ah dawn't know what it ees or whaat... But it EES eeeresisteble and Ah can't take mah nose off of it.

Mom then came in and saw me losing mahself een this acteevity. She tapped me from behand, trahd to deestract me, as Ah kept pushing the whole basket with mah nose naw.. awl the way to the door.

"Hey! ", she said. Ah was in such a trance, Ah went eento mah primal eenstincts. Nuting could deestract me naw, not even mom . One moare tap awn mah back and Ah turned around sharply and went to bite her toe: "NO! Leave me BE!" Ah had to keep AWN 'dis thang and fand out what 'dis smale (smell) waus awl about. It made me drunk with frenzy and Ah couldn't help mahself.

Then mom reached over and took the whole thang out of mah reach... the whole basket was gone.

Well.. at least Ah trahd. Ah grudgingly walked out upon hearing her tale me to go 'out, out!'.

[I have no idea what it is they have been maniacally sniffing about... maybe a smidge of my hormone cream?!! ]

Mah Temptation

Ah watched mom get up tuday, followed her around, and once I saw her go into the uther small room bah the living room, Ah took mah post.

Ah plopped mahself nearbah her side, on the cool floor, laike Ah used to do upstairs in the smaller room [the bathroom].
So Ah got comfortable, this was gonna be our time where Ah have some peace and quiet with mom alone.

And then? What do Ah see outta the corner of mah eye: Pipi. Pipi, coming around, at first sauntering about. She takes one look at me, and Ah'm thanking: 'it's awl cool.. "

Next thang Ah know, she's startin' to taunt me. And naw Ah'm starting to lower mah whole body to the floor, stalking and balancing mahself for ejection. And at that, she flies off the handle and bolts like a wildfire across the room and Ah'm off! After her, chasing her.

Cawmpletely forgawt mah place in there with mom...See, that's how Pipi tempts me to forget mahself..

There Are Times When...

Hah, y'awl ...Again.

You know? Life with mom and Pipi has been so gooode. Ah couldn't ask for anytin' moare, really. Ah've gotten used to our routine, mom's comings and goings, Pipi's crazy antics and bossiness... Ah put up with AWL of that. She has helped me understand that when mom closes that door, she cannot be disturbed. And so, Ah just wait patiently bah the door every morning bafawre she opens it without a fuss.

Ah just stay quiet and wait.

But there are times Ah do worry, and Ah feel compelled to check with her and make sure she's awright, in the middle of the naight.

You see.. Ah see mom sometimes, and Ah can't explain where or how... but it seems so real to me. And Ah see her in danger and awl... And Ah get upset and then... Ah open mah eyes and see that Ah'm in the same spot Ah was bafawre... But Ah have to check and make sure that SHE is awkay too.

And so, Ah will go up to the door real close and cawl her: "Moooom???"

"Moooom??? Are you there? Are you awkay??? " .... "Please answer me, Ah really need to know..."

"It's OKAY!... It's OKAY!", Ah'll hear her say from insade. Ah can hear her answering back to me.

And 'dat's awl Ah really wanted to hear, just to make sure. And then Ah just go back to sleep.

Ah Do Mah Best

Hah, y'awl... Ah'm right here pawing the keyboard with mom.

Ah know she trahs to get beeesy with this thang but Ah do mah best to deestract her. In a loving way, where she won't notice as much.

Ah can win her over with mah affections - and Ah win against the thang [laptop]. Ah first jump up on the table, then quietly saunter her way acting laike Ah'm beesy looking at the thang as if it waus the first time Ah ever saw it. ("huuhhh... what's thees??")

Anywah, and then Ah put mah face up to hers and kiss her lightly. Ah turn mah shoulder toward her and brush up against her. Mah tail spins back and forth as Ah shashay. And awl the while, Ah'm right there in front of her, Ah'm between her and the thang, see?

Ah then walk awl over the keyboard and do a back-step a few times when she trahs to block me.. It's awl een the wah you handle it, see? Ah know exactly just how low-key Ah need to be so that she duzn't take me off the table entirely.

Ah then lay down right next to her and take a snooze.

Princess Watching TV News

This is not the one and only time that Princess has focused intently on the TV screen. We have other videos on that.
But what makes this interesting is that she even stood up to take a better look.

Gabriel, on the other hand, couldn't care less about the TV. He has never watched, but Princess always does.

Pipi and The Fly

This is a real treat, on video. It's Princess focusing on getting a fly.

But notice, she doesn't want to mess up the picture frames on the table.

A video here, is truly worth all the words I could have written.

Mah Favorite Thang

Ah like to follow mom around, 'dat's no secret.

So when she goes bah the couch, Ah follow and plop down awn the coffee table. Sometimes, Ah'm facing the uther wah, it depends. But Ah always laike to be bah this square thang that's awn there, awn the table.

It's a blue square thang, and it's got a ball in it. Mom once showed me the ball, and Ah've liked it ever seence. Ah laike to touch it, put mah paw right awn it.

Ah fand it eeenteresting..

Ah Make An Adjustment

Awkay: Ah've gawt mah favorite spots, Ah do admit. So when mom starts gettin' on the thang in the daning room, Ah like to go bah the side of the wall and take mah naps there.

Howevah: The past couple of times tuday, she's come over to me and nudged me to get up and get away from there.

"Not a good spot, not a good spot for you... come on, this way..", she'll say.

So Ah follow her faithfully, as she shows me the way with her finger and Ah focus on that and walk away from there. Although, the second or third time she did it, Ah became mildly annoyed.. Ah do resist if Ah don't understand the purpose of what's bean done here. So, Ah was like: 'whaat? again?' and Ah grudgingly get up while she taps mah back with her hand to get up.. And then, Ah look up and trah to get whah she's doin' what she's doin... Ah shook mah shoulders the last time when she trahd to touch me again..

Naw... the third or fourth time Ah tried to go back there? Ah figured, Ah'll make a slaight adjustment. Ah layed down in a totally different way this time, thinking this is gonna do it...

[ Gabriel continues to want to snooze by the internet router and it's really not cool at all... too much exposure to electricity there...and he gets pissed off at me too now, when I try to get him outta there. :) ]

It Beckoned To me...

I just couldn't help myself. The bright blue bottle cap beckoned, and I did it. I took it off the water bottle. Got it on the floor.

Mom did tell me a while back not to do that. She always keeps that water bottle right in the same spot, and I used to take the caps off all the time. But one day, she just told me, she was getting sick and tired of this game. So I stopped doing it. Even though I love to seize on little thingies.

So, the bottles keep appearing there, and I've let the caps on them every time. But this one? It was a different color. I just couldn't let it BE.

So next thing I know, mom comes to me holding the thingy..

"What is THIS??!!", she says. Oh, that? Oh. My ears went down and sideways and back and forth. I twitched my neck in the opposite direction and decided it was time to go.

I sauntered quietly away...

[I've never actually SEEN her take it off... I don't know if she does it with her mouth or how... ]

Ah Oblage...

You know, Ah sometimes seem to lose mah place when it comes time to shut down for the naight.

That's when mom starts turnin' owt the lights and says 'time to go to beddie-bye' to Pipi and Ah. And then Pipi starts up her shenanigans, tries to tale me what to do and what nawt... Laike when to go up to mom, and then she sometimes tries to keep me from coming over "upstairs" to join them.

So Ah feel like a guest, sometimes.. and wait patiently "downstairs".

But then, the uther naight, mom called for me. She leaned out from above me, while Ah waus lingering, hesitantly, bah the bottom of the stairs, not knowing what to do... And she called on me.

"Gabriel?? honey??!! You coming upstairs? "

Ah waus so happy, Ah answered her 'yes' ("brrrr"!) and Ah started running up the stairs to join her with awl mah might...

Ah was so satisfied when Ah got up there, near her... Nuttin' can keep me away, not even Pipi.

Another Way For Me To Make My Mark..

As I go about my busy day around the house when mom isn't here, I actually discovered another yet spot where I could make my mark clear.

I found it necessary to jump all the way up to the guest bathroom sink, which is quite high mind you. It was necessary for me to do it so I could mark it properly - and clearly. Right there in the middle of the sink bowl.

And you know? I had never thought of that before.. (Oh, but I started watching mom using it lately, so... it was necessary, like I said.)

[A little running water and it was cleaned out, thank god.. ]

On Alert

Thangs did not go raight since late yesterday, really.. Mom came later than usual and Ah was a beet meeffed. Even though Ah followed her as usual and plopped mahself down across from her awn the coffee table, Ah was definitely peaqued.

She noticed me from her spot on the couch, as she looked up at me. Ah was lounging there awn mah favorite spot, facing her. And regarding her. But mah eyes and ears gave away mah anger. She beckoned me to come over and make up, though ... And so, Ah did, Ah got up and jumped on her belly, as usual... Ah been doing that since Ah was a little baby, you know..

But thangs kinda took a strange turn... After mom went up to "beddie bye', she actually came out again. At a time she never does. And she went out the door, she left. Ah watched, helplessly..

She came back a leetle later and Ah could tale she just wasn't herself. Pipi and Ah both walked around on eggshells, watching her every move.

She opened the door 'dis mornin', just naw. Ah was sleeping in 'my room' [the spare bedroom] but Ah soon as Ah heard 'dat door open, Ah jumped to mah feet and came out to see her. Make sure thangs were awlright.

Ah normally don't do that when Ah'm lounging awn that big bed in there, but with the way thangs went down last night, Ah had to make an exception. Mand you, Ah'm not obvious while Ah check thangs owt. Ah mean, Ah won't stare right in her eyes, like Pipi does with her fretful expressions. Naw, Ah play it cool.

[Mom had a ...sports-injury of sorts as she lingered in the gym and worked out a bit too late..]

An Awkward Moment

Well, it was more than a moment, really. It was a few moments.

I was coming up from "downstairs" after being chased by that scrunchy bag again. What can I tell you, I heard the scrunchy sound right behind me as I was quietly rolling around the floor. I jumped to my feet and scrammed so fast, you couldn't say 'screw me!' in time. Mom stood there, holding the bag, laughing; and she shook it again so I ran the fastest I could all the way from the far end of the living room to "downstairs".

I just can't stand the scrunchy bag, I just can't. But I digress.

So I come back up from my own exile, and as I step up the dining room in my usual nonchalant saunter, I look up and what do I see: Googie getting completely covered on top of the table by mom's arms. I mean, all I could see was his back to me, while mom was just standing there hugging all of him. I just looked once, really. Once was enough for me. I jerked my face around and my ears went down, as I walked a few more steps looking down on the carpet.

I looked up again to check out the situation as Googie turned his head in my direction to face me. So I looked right at him, made direct eye contact and my eyes widening reaaal round, as I wonder: "Goog? what is going on?"

Cool as a breeze, Goog just shrugged "She just wants to hug me, Pipi... what's wrong with that?"

[Her little face changed expressions as she stared at me first, and then 'Googie'... Is it jealousy? Did she think it was weird of me to hug him that much? Am I violating their pecking order? ]

Marking My Own

You know? I have my own carrier, the place where mom puts me in when we go to "the doctor".

It's a bright pink thing, totally different color than Googie's. And both of them are "downstairs", as much out of sight as possible.

Well, you know, I have been marking pretty much every wall corner in the house whenever I feel like it. And I thought it quite appropriate that I would mark my own carrier as well.

So let-it-rip, did I. Right on the "Princess" lettering.

Huh! I saw mom come down today and she knelt down and looked at my carrier. She stared at it confused... She couldn't figure out what had happened!

[Yep, Princess has marked her made-to-order, specially monogrammed carrier. NOT Googie's, only hers.]

The Technical Cat

Ah continue to remain obseassed with mah water bowl...

You see, the thang is, Ah can hear the water that somehow comes down in bubbles. But Ah dawn't know how that comes to be.

So mom, one day, trahd to show it to me: She placed her own paw up top, and somehow Ah heard the 'glug, glug' sound again.
"See that? That's how that's done", she said to me.

Ah trahd with mah own paw, pat-pat... And then Ah looked up top, expectang the water to flow and do its thang again.. But nothing.. Ah looked intently.

Mom then put her paw up top again: "You just tapp it, just like that".. And Ah looked closely again, and looked at the water, and heard it 'glug-glug' down. Huh... Well, Ah dawn't know.. Ah need to think about this some moare.

And then Pipi comes around. "What's up Googie? Is this thing not working?"

Ah tried to look beesy, guess it waus time to drink some water.

Ah Wanna Be Close

Ah'm right here with mom, laying right on the table.

Ah have settled eento a spot really close up to the thang [the laptop], and Ah'm looking right at this light thang in it [the screen].
c vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvwqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq [his pawing on the keyboard].

Ah hesitate to reach out with mah paw naw, to tuuuch her paws, 'cauze she keeps whining to me to "noooo"...

So, I have curled mah paw under to keep away [from the keyboard].
