PRINCESS's STORY

"The Princess Diaries" began about fourteen years ago as emails to cat loving friends. They were stories about Princess's diary, a tabby cat who was born in 1989 when I rescued her. She was about four months old. She was in tune with everything I did or even think, she always amazed me so much, I just had to write about her. After nineteen years with me, she
went to the Rainbow Bridge in August of 2008.

The house felt painfully empty after her passing. But I vowed never to replace her. In my heart, she was irreplaceable.
And then I started to see her in my dreams. Suddenly, I remembered one morning that I had seen her back in her healthy form and I was told "she is ready now". I was not sure what that really meant.

Just a couple of days later, I was led to a pet psychic by other people at an Expo event. It was an unplanned, spontaneous occurrence, I had not thought about visiting a pet psychic and did not even have a picture of her that they could use.
Princess' spirit came through the pet psychic who repeated those same words I had heard in the dream: "She is ready" .... to be born again.

How would I find her? How? She said it would be "like a Petsmart, one of those places".

I took it in stride. I still did not want to replace her with any other cat. One day, about 2 months later, I found myself suddenly making a turn off the main road into a Petco I never go to, away from my area. I felt compelled to go in even though I had no other cats to care for. I spotted an adoption fair poster in there... and I heard clearly in my heart and mind the thought that 'you've got to follow up on this - don't let it go'. I did.

I returned for the adoption fair and as I entered, I began to feel like I was in a trance.. I kept looking in cages but could not "feel it". Finally, I came to the end of the cage line and I stood motionless, staring at this tiny tabby baby sleeping on top of a larger orange fluffy kitten. She was less than 2 months old. As I stood there, contemplating my feelings, the orange kitten stood up and came to the front of the cage, reaching out to me with his paw... He let out a meow at me as he saw me take a few steps away, mulling this sight over in my mind. I turned to see this kitten holding out his paw at me, literally meowing for me to come back...

When Princess II came home with Gabriel, she was barely 2 months old. And she knew. She knew all the old tricks and phrases - and she wanted to show me exactly what she knew.
She was born in the same type of body, a tabby.

I could not tell while she was a tiny baby but she grew to have the same type of bow-legged look to her hind legs. She also carried the same fear. Princess was fearful of the scrunchy sound of plastic or paper bags all throughout her life with me, it may have been something that had happened to her in her first 4 months of life before I rescued her. She also had a herniated belly when I found her in 1989. Now this new kitten, as she grew, had a slight protruding feel on the same spot of her belly, although vets did not detect anything 'wrong' with it.

To this day, the new Princess is still fearful of scrunchy bag sounds while no other cat in the household is.
"It's time for beddie bye now", I said when she returned to the house as a two-month old - and on cue, she climbed up the stairs immediately and looked down at me from upstairs for my reaction. I was just floored ...this little kitten responded to a phrase she never heard of before. "Wanna get some 'nummy-num'?" - Yes! She ran to the bowls. This was her first time as a new kitten in the house.

It was a miracle - and we are still living it. It has been now been over 8 years later now since her new incarnation.

The Off-Limits Thingies

Princess here, and you know? I like to zero in on small things, and pretty much take them, if I can. You know, the old cap on the bottle although not so much anymore. Not since mom told me straight up not to do it. I swear, I haven't done it ever since. [the cap of the plastic water bottle.]

But anyway, there are other things that I really desire, like her pen... hmm.. although, that again, is no longer the apple of my eye..

Anyway, though... things like that. Like a hair barette.. Or, like that pink thingy, that really catches my eye [the ear plug by my night table]. Whatever and whenever I can, if it's something I can steal with my mouth and hide? It's game. But she has to not miss it. See what I mean?

For example: She's got a whole LOT of other thingies, all over that big [dresser] of hers.. right in her room. Now, those thingies?? I just KNOW are completely, and totally? Off Limits. Even if she leaves some of them "downstairs" ? on top of the kitchen counter? And even though I jump up there and traipse around? They're still Off Limits. I will never, and have never, put one such shiny thingy in my mouth to run away with.

I have known this since the beginning. She's never had to tell me. And Googie is on board with that too.

[She just will not touch my jewelry - no matter where I might leave it. I can trust her on that.]

:))

The Day's Sundries..

Tuday, it waus pretty much just laike any uther day.

Ah hung around mom's room, plopped mahself down on her bed, and relaxed.

Ah then reckon she came bah close to me and started eenspectin' mah nethers. Well, that's old-hat. Ah turned and shifted the uther way, but really? I just wanted to relax.

She came back with that shiny, tiny thang [scissors]. And focused again on mah nethers. Ah waus careful nawt to move whale she worked on me. (Ouch, she kanda.. poked me there.. but Ah was very patience, Ah might admeet.)

Ah guess you could say, Ah gawt a "sanitary cleep".

:) [That's right: he got a sanitary clip. ]

The Pack Leader

How do you know if you are seen as the 'pack leader' from your cat's point of view?

It used to be, Princess One used to always wait for me to start going downstairs first, each morning. She would then follow. And that was one sure way.

With these two, it's a different thing: They emulate everything I do.

They emulate my morning routine, and my evening routine. Both involve opening cabinets, which they watch me do. And so, once I settle in for the evening, for example, I will start hearing Gabriel banging the cabinet door as he tries to open it. And he will just leave it there, open.

In the morning, they watch me reach over for the toilet paper. I had to keep it in a special place because Princess is so observant, she'd go over to it and start to roll it off. So now I keep it closed up in the empty medicine cabinet of the 'cat bathroom'.. It's their room, and they know it. (For plumbing reasons, I'm using 'their room' for a while.)

So, as I walked in one morning, I found the medicine cabinet door open, and the toilet paper roll placed right on the sink - as an attempt to cover up the doo-doo. The point is, they saw me place the roll in there and take it out - and they emulated.

They will go eat when they see ME eat; they will follow me from room to room and lay down near me if I lay down. And they will jump up on the kitchen counter and explore because that's where I spend time working on cooking and cleaning dishes - so they try and emulate that by walking around there.

So yes, I'm definitely the 'pack leader' here... (Or so I think.. :).. )

A Wedge Between Us...

There's a place near our 'nummy num' where mom likes to go and do things. Well, she just comes and goes back and forth from this area. I watch her every time open these doors, and then put things here and move things there...

I watch in fascination and I can never quite understand what it is she is really doing.

One time, I jumped up to investigate and I fell into this ....hole! It was in the middle of this big white thing behind the doors. [the laundry washing machine]

Anyway, she always tells me to leave from there every time she sees me. Which only fuels my curiosity even more. Sometimes, another little door gets left open and I jump up on it to see what's in there; but that's a big no-no, I can tell because she'll use that high-pitched voice of hers ("Ah!!"), instead of a civilized word. [No cat in the dryer please!]

Well, tonight I discovered this little thingy near the big doors. It was really a small thingy, small enough for me to push around. Yeah, that's right: I pushed it this way and that and decided that it belonged right about wedged between the floor and the door.. that little opening there, uh-huh.

Next thing I know, I hear mom fumbling with the door while I'm outta there and in the living room by now. I turn around and see her standing there, looking right at me.

[ I won't repeat here what I really did say at first ...]

I looked back at her totally confused, my eyes popping wide open. "Who? ME?? "

"What the F--K did you DO?!!!", she bellowed right at me. This, was the time to high-tail it. Onto "downstairs" and out of her way!

But... I thought I was doing her a ... favor.. I really did think that I put this little thingy where it belonged!

[... this piece of broken, errant wood off of the trim down there by the doors.. big enough to jam the whole door..]

The Meaning of Kneading

You know, Princess has gotten into a regular pattern for the past couple of years now of 'kneading' on my belly when she sees me lay down.

I call it a cat massage.

We have really gotten into a regular pattern with it though. It seems nowadays, every time I lay down at the end of the day, she'll come over and start to 'knead'. (God knows, I already have plenty of video footage to prove it and many of you have seen them, they're all in here and on YouTube.)

Well, it just so happened that tonight, a Facebook friend posted a similar cat video of a caring cat 'kneading' another cat.. The other cat was down on the ground, dying...

It was a very touching bit of footage which I would like to share. Because it shows how much a cat can care.

What About Googie?

Mom came home the other night and she had our "nummy-num" in her hands. I could tell she was searching for it for a while out there and that's why she comes home later sometimes.

So she puts our "nummy-num" on the bowl but she keeps it up top, on the kitchen counter.

She looked at me then and said: "Go ahead! You can go ahead". See, she had seen me go up there before to try and eat it.

But I hesitated. Now that we're changing it up, I wasn't quite sure if it was really okay cause this is a place I'm not really supposed to be on.

I looked at her and then turned to look at Googie, wondering how is this gonna work out? does she just want ME to eat it?

Well, okay: I decided I was going to oblige and jumped up to help myself.

:)

Cat Accountability

Eet waus on the same naight when Pipi and Ah scrambled out of mom's room becoze it was our time to go to 'beddie bye'.

And so, Ah chased Pipi a leetle beet and we fussed. We flew down the stairs and what nawt. Ah really dawn't know what happened but ruckus did ensue.

Next thang Ah know, mom opens the door:

"WHO DID this?!!", Ah heard her yell.

Ah paws-ed.. You know? AH'M nawt gonna hide. On THIS occasion? Ah'm gonna show up.

Ah ran up the stairs like a bullet, leaving Pipi behind down there, and presented mahself to mom right bah the bedroom entrance, tale up in the air.

[And that's exactly how it happened... I yelled 'Who did this?!!', and he comes up running to face me.. ! :)) ]

A Dark Figure

It was a real warm day the uther day and mom opened the windows in her room. So Ah jumped up on the ledge to take in the smells from outside. Pipi and Ah both love to sit there.

Later at night, mom turned off awl the lights. Ah reckon it waus 'beddie-bye' time. So there were some comings and goings between mom and Pipi.

Suddenly, as Ah waus standing there still bah the window, Ah see this dark figure walking toward me. Awl the lights were out Ah tale ya, it waus pitch black.

Ah kinda knew it waus mom - but on the uther paw, this didn't look right: it's dark, she's coming right in mah direction, and Ah don't really know what for?

Ah take no chances: Ah jumped down laike a runaway and hid under the chair.

Ah mean... she never comes in this direction, it ain't right. Her bed was in a totally different direction where she shoulda gone!

[Gabriel can somehow sense when I'm out of it, tired, and in this dark room he 'ain't gonna take no chances'. ]

:)

Ah Do Require Acknowledgement..

Ah climbed up on mom's bed yesterday evening after much deliberation.

You see, Pipi was already awn there and that complicates thangs.

So Ah stood there, near the bed, cawntemplatin' the situation. Pipi has a way of makin' me feel laike Ah'm gonna mess up thangs if Ah jump up.

Anywah, Ah got over mah hesitation and meesgivings and went for it. Ah jumped up to join the club.

Ah walked over to mom's side and Ah stalled. But she wouldn't even look over mah way. She did nawt reach over to stroke me, either. She kept looking elsewhere.

Well, that's it then. Ah didn't give it much of a chance, and Ah didn't feel welcome. Ah just jumped right back down and took mah secondary post outside the bedroom.

"Gabrieeel??!!", Ah heard mom cawling a few moments later.

Aw, no. Ah need some kand of attention, some kand of acknowledgement if Ah'm gonna make the effort and come up to join you. Ah cannot be ignored.

"Gabriel, PLEASE!?? Come on back here!", mom eensisted.

Naw..Nope...

I Don't Associate Myself..

A few days ago, mom came in as usual and we all got to the kitchen. Gabriel and I stood there in anticipation, while mom looked down at us, saying her 'hellooo!'... She was glad to see us and we both sat there looking back at her.

And then Gabriel went a step further and dropped to the floor in response to mom's attentions. That's where it turns into a circus... I watched him roll his big belly back and forth, just for mom's benefit, while SHE ate it all up and 'coo-coo'ed' him even more for ... DOING it!

"Awww!!!! MY baby!!", she would go... And then he would roll back and forth some more... And I'm standing there, next to this ridiculous little scene.

Well I had had enough. Right about the umtenth time of this little love-in, I stalked away in a huff. Ears down.

I can't be part of this anymore.

:))) [She did too... She obviously thinks he's being too silly.. ]

Defaying Basic Eenstincts

Ah must admeet, Ah've got some rather awkward moments sometame.

Laike the uther day... Ah honestly dawn't remembah how lawng it was ago but Pipi was in her frenzy again, y'knaw, she was beean crazy.

And so, Ah really didn't have a choice. She waus right up in mah ears pretty much, stretchin' herself and awl. And so, Ah tried once again to step up on the plate.

Well - loook... we were gonna make out, awkay?

But thean... Thean, Ah felt somebody watching me from behand.. And Ah turned around and realized mom was in the room, right there watcheen me...

Aw, mah mah, oh- mah... Ah had to forgo mah basic eenstincts and pull away from the action, know what Ah mean?

And so, Ah stepped gingerly away - cancel that! And Ah tried to act beeesy with somethin' else, oh laike Ah found this thang right there and rubbed up against it.

And Ah looked back at Pipi, who's in the heat of the moment so to speak... And Ah just whinced and shimmied - couldn't do a damn thang about it.!
