PRINCESS's STORY

"The Princess Diaries" began about fourteen years ago as emails to cat loving friends. They were stories about Princess's diary, a tabby cat who was born in 1989 when I rescued her. She was about four months old. She was in tune with everything I did or even think, she always amazed me so much, I just had to write about her. After nineteen years with me, she
went to the Rainbow Bridge in August of 2008.

The house felt painfully empty after her passing. But I vowed never to replace her. In my heart, she was irreplaceable.
And then I started to see her in my dreams. Suddenly, I remembered one morning that I had seen her back in her healthy form and I was told "she is ready now". I was not sure what that really meant.

Just a couple of days later, I was led to a pet psychic by other people at an Expo event. It was an unplanned, spontaneous occurrence, I had not thought about visiting a pet psychic and did not even have a picture of her that they could use.
Princess' spirit came through the pet psychic who repeated those same words I had heard in the dream: "She is ready" .... to be born again.

How would I find her? How? She said it would be "like a Petsmart, one of those places".

I took it in stride. I still did not want to replace her with any other cat. One day, about 2 months later, I found myself suddenly making a turn off the main road into a Petco I never go to, away from my area. I felt compelled to go in even though I had no other cats to care for. I spotted an adoption fair poster in there... and I heard clearly in my heart and mind the thought that 'you've got to follow up on this - don't let it go'. I did.

I returned for the adoption fair and as I entered, I began to feel like I was in a trance.. I kept looking in cages but could not "feel it". Finally, I came to the end of the cage line and I stood motionless, staring at this tiny tabby baby sleeping on top of a larger orange fluffy kitten. She was less than 2 months old. As I stood there, contemplating my feelings, the orange kitten stood up and came to the front of the cage, reaching out to me with his paw... He let out a meow at me as he saw me take a few steps away, mulling this sight over in my mind. I turned to see this kitten holding out his paw at me, literally meowing for me to come back...

When Princess II came home with Gabriel, she was barely 2 months old. And she knew. She knew all the old tricks and phrases - and she wanted to show me exactly what she knew.
She was born in the same type of body, a tabby.

I could not tell while she was a tiny baby but she grew to have the same type of bow-legged look to her hind legs. She also carried the same fear. Princess was fearful of the scrunchy sound of plastic or paper bags all throughout her life with me, it may have been something that had happened to her in her first 4 months of life before I rescued her. She also had a herniated belly when I found her in 1989. Now this new kitten, as she grew, had a slight protruding feel on the same spot of her belly, although vets did not detect anything 'wrong' with it.

To this day, the new Princess is still fearful of scrunchy bag sounds while no other cat in the household is.
"It's time for beddie bye now", I said when she returned to the house as a two-month old - and on cue, she climbed up the stairs immediately and looked down at me from upstairs for my reaction. I was just floored ...this little kitten responded to a phrase she never heard of before. "Wanna get some 'nummy-num'?" - Yes! She ran to the bowls. This was her first time as a new kitten in the house.

It was a miracle - and we are still living it. It has been now been over 8 years later now since her new incarnation.

Trying to Explain? .... (Revised)

Mom came home tonight and I guess she wasn't in a really good mood.

Well - she went over to the other room I guess to turn on the "TV" thing, and then she started walking back toward the kitchen. And so, I followed her footsteps ... and well, got ahead of her, I figured I was going to lead her to the kitchen. I knew what was going on and I just do that.

How was I supposed to know she was gonna suddenly go off another direction? So I was right there next to her feet, trying to walk past her and be the first to enter the kitchen - when she ran into me. And I mean she really did although I didn't yelp or hurt or anything.

She yelled at me and I started going for the upstairs steps. But then? I figured, 'there's no point to just running away from this'.

I stood there by the fifth step, a little over eye-level with mom now. It was a safe enough place for me to stop and look back at mom. Even though my very stance was poised to flee if I had to, with my body facing toward the next step and my neck craned back toward mom, I tried to reason with her:

I opened my mouth and quietly murmured back at her, looking her right in the eyes: "I didn't see you, okay?", I tried to get her to understand. And I waited to see what she was gonna do.

She stood there staring at me, eyeballing me. This seemed to somehow reach her in some way, and she turned on her heel and went into the kitchen.

I didn't really have to run... I may run like hell when I know I'm in the wrong, but this was one time I know I didn't do anything wrong.

[ That tiny little mouth of hers just looked like she was talking - and in her own way, her own natural capacity - She was.]

Ah Dawn't Understand...

Awkay, naw ... this has bean going awn for a little while naw.

Whenevah Ah take mah spot up against the wall near mom's table, where she's busy with 'the thang'? [laptop]. Something doesn't jive too good.

Like just naw.. Ah layed right there, with the wall on mah back to support me, and began to cleanse mahself. Ah personally thought this was as good a spot as any.

But she came awn over to me, getting up from her spot and awl, and quietly told me this isn't a good spot for me... 'Come awn, this way', she said. Ah didn't understand, really. Ah fell backwards from mah cleansing stance, you know .. Ah had one leg up and such... And so, mah belly took center stage, so to speak, rolling back and forth while Ah'm awn mah back..

'C'mon, this way... not a good spot', she eensisted. Ah tried to get up but Ah couldn't and wouldn't, really.. Ah didn't quate get whah Ah had to move? Ah was fane the way Ah was, even in this .. compromasing position, naw under the chair close to the wall.

Finally, she got me back up with all mah four paws on the floor and Ah followed her finger, as usual. Huh...

So Ah settled for camping it next to her, awn the table. (It waus much better, really - Ah got stroked on mah head every few seconds whale Ah dozed off.. What could be bettah..)

[He tends to lay down next to the internet router and all the electricity that's surrounding it... ]

A Freightening Scene

I just came upon the most unbelievable scene with these two:

Princess, weighing 6 pounds, attacking Gabriel, SIXTEEN pounds - repeatedly. While he's down. And he's meowing, plaintively.
While she kept on biting him close to the neck, harder and harder.

Well, you can all be sure i broke that little scene up. After she was scolded with 'BAD CAT!', she bolted for the lower level. I turned to check on Gabriel - his fur was literally all tufted out of place. He seemed a little confused... I asked him " Are you okay, baby?", stroking his back.

She hears this from downstairs and runs back up to see what she's missing: she looks at me, looks at Gabriel..

"YOU'RE a BAD CAT!", I say again. On cue, back down she runs again. And he follows her (!).. In his concerned-cat mode.

She comes back up again and I can see both of them poised for an ambush on each other, but as I passed on the scene they actually restrained themselves.

A few minutes later, I see them back to normal again - Princess stooping on the first step, Gabriel beneath her, stooping in what appeared to be a submissive mode, looking up at her..

I have no idea what prompted this fight. But I remember Princess doing something close to this the first time I saw them together in their adoption cage - she was just under two months old and already a firecracker. And he, the big-guy in all respects, just takes it most of the time.

Couldn't Handle It

Mom came home tonaight and did her usual thangs... We all did our usual thangs, come to thank of it.

Ah chased Pipi, Pipi chased me back, Ah slid through the [hardwood] floor and banged mahself into the doors.. It's awl good.

And then MOM comes out of the keeetchen and does this strange, sudden move at me. [It was a dance move, really.]

Aw, naww! Ah can't have that.. This is too muuuch! Ah mean, it just came outta nowhere raight at me. Ah mean, Ah was standing right there, not expecting it.

Ah just saw her for a second with her right arm reaching out into the air and what nawt ... Aw, naww!

Ah just got the hale out of the wah and ran up the stairs as fast as Ah could!!

[He came down couple minutes later, didn't even notice him he must've done it real slick.]

Worried for a Minute...

I jumped on mom's bed the other night to be with her before 'beddie-bye' time.

So I cuddled and curled up between her arm and her hip, facing her. I knew the 'TV' was on but I really didn't wanna watch.

Something was up though. Normally, I would've drifted into a snooze right then and there but I caught sight of mom's face and she looked really sad and upset..

This held me in a suspended state ...where my face stopped right there looking right at her, I just couldn't move or look around or anything. I studied her face carefully, my eyes got really big. She kept looking at the 'TV' thing. And then she looked down at me and noticed me looking at her, worried.

"Oh, it's okay, honey. I'm okay, really."

I relaxed after that, I guess, and we went back to our routine of snoozing.

[ I was watching a late news segment about the life of the late Elizabeth Taylor...]

To Deeg Or Not To Deeg

... 'Dat? Is the question.

Ah flew across the room tonaight after nibbling awn mah dinner, excited and awl.

Mah next step woulda bean to go deeg mah claws at that particular spot that Ah go to awl the time. But my momentum was cut eerily short.

Mom began to talk to me and here Ah thought she waus gonna go 'upstairs'.. But she stood there, mid-way up the steps, and started sayin' thangs to me. Something about she was 'watching me' and that Ah 'should use the scratching post'.

Awl this talk pretty much stopped me, my momentum, and all mah paws on their tracks ... so to speak. Awl in awl, Ah was just confused but Ah got it. Ah got that Ah wausn't supposed to do anythang.

Nawt to mention that there was this uther thang right bafawre me, where Ah would usually deeg mah claws at. So Ah just hung around the general viceeniteh for the rest of the time, even though Ah did nawt act on it.

[ He can't figure out that the scratching post there is for his use... He thinks it's just to block him from doing it... ]

My Latest Schtick

I sensed another intruder come into the house again today. Googie and I both felt him, long before ... We didn't go down to greet mom when she came in, we just knew something was up.

So what I do nowadays is I just go under mom's bed covers. I crawl way underneath the blanket, and stay there. It's less hassle than jumping off the bed in the middle of my nap and hiding under the bed, you see.

This way, I just disappear and I can't see anything - and nobody can see ME.

[... Except this little ...MOUND in the middle of the bed sticking out under the blanket. ]

:)))

How Mah Day Began

Mom came out of her room this mornin' and she did her usual thang... And then she got ready to go down, Ah could tale.

And so, Ah began to walk briskly just ahead of her, knowing the drill.

But then? Ah felt this soothing thang go down mah back.. Ah knew she was brushing me you see. And so, Ah stopped right there in my tracks, right before Ah waus ready to go jumping down the stairs.

Ah stood there on cue, while she brushed me a little beeet. How relaxing.

That's the kand of thang that makes me stop on mah paws..

Aftermath of the Introduction to the Calm Collar....

The results are in! And they're not good.

She took one sniff of the collar, didn't let me put it around her neck and so I left it by the steps.

She went by and sniffed it some more.

She has now disappeared completely...

[It's a good thing that the store accepts returns, they reassured me. Guess there IS such thing as ...too much of a sexy smell even for cats. LOL]

:)

The "Calming Collar"

I happened to stop by the other day at this new pet store in our neighorhood. (No, this is not "Pipi" talking - It's her mom! :) )

The name of this new store is "Unleashed", which I thought was really cute and creative. It turns out they have all sorts of specialty items that you might spend twice as much time looking for in the super-pet stores.

So I found this 'calming collar', it's 'for cats & kittens'. Part of the branding includes: "Good behavior - pheromone collar".

Well, I think we've come a long way in the consciousness of loving and caring for animals when you see a thing like this on the box:

"Recommended for problems such as:
- separation anxiety
- destructive behavior

and my favorite:

- inappropriate marking (!!)

So, you know: if your cat marks "inappropriately", there IS a solution here..

(I haven't put it on "Pipi" yet, I need to be in the house for a while to monitor her and make sure it doesn't become a problem to her - or to Gabriel, who may react who knows how..)

Yeaaahh....we've come a loong way, Ah tale you..

:))

Ah Know When....

Pipi and Ah spend the naight together while mom is in her room, sleeping.

Ah know when she's sleeping, and Ah dawn't disturb her. Pipi has made sure to tale me about awl that.

Howevah: When she duz wake up, Ah feel Ah'm beang cheated awn, awkay??!!

Ah KNOW when she's awake even though there is a door closed between us. Dawn't ask me how Ah know, Ah just know. So, the minute she wakes up, Ah feeel it. Ah feel it, and Ah speak up.

Unfortunately, she is nawt always ready to come greet me at that particular time.

Unfortunately? Ah hear thangs laike "Stop it!", and "Don't wake me up!!"

At which point? Ah'll quietly stop and wait for however long it takes for that door to open.

[ HOW does he know I'm awake?? I have no idea, but he does... He always does know. ]

A Phrase I Know Well

I was hanging out mom's room last night, watching her get ready for "beddie-bye". It's our routine.

I watched her climb into bed though before she closed the door, so I just stood there close to the night table. Where she has all these delightful little thingies I like to explore with both my paws and my mouth.

So I keep watching her, and she starts looking for something.

"What did you do with my thing?", she turned to me and said.

I came to from my relaxed gaze. Whoop! I realized I'm in trouble and high-tailed it outta the room.

....It doesn't bode well when I hear that phrase, 'what did you do with my thing'..

An Indignant Cat

Mom came home tonaight and she served us our dinner quate quickly. Ah pretty much let Pipi have at it as Ah walked away from the bowls soon after to join mom at the table... She was on the thang again..

Well, Ah nevah...!

As soon as Ah had gotten up there, she stood up and told me to "get down". Resigned to the inevitable, Ah turned on mah paw and did just that. Hale.

Ah disappeared into the keetchen and shortly thereafter Ah decided Ah waus gonna walk past bah her again and totally ignore that whole area. Ah set mah sights on Pipi on the uther end of the room.

"Gabriel?? ", Ah heard mom trahing to appease me. Bah that moment Ah had reached past the table.

Ah stopped in mid-stride and curved mah neck to look back at her upon hearin' mah name. Ah looked right at her with mah hurt feeeleng's showing raight through, Ah wausn't gonna lie...

"Awww!!! ", she went. "What's the matter?"

Whatevah... Ah picked up mah stride back up and went awn mah way.

Checking Mahself

Ah consider mom's area around 'the thang' [laptop] mah territory too. Ah like to jump up on the table at a moment's notice - whether mom's there or nawt.

The uther night Ah deed just that. Ah decided Ah waus gonna jump up there while mom was nearbah [laying on the couch].

As Ah jumped up, it just so happened Ah came face to face ....with mahself! Ah looked for a few moments straight eento mah reflection, and then turned around and looked at mom across the room. She was watching me.

Ah really didn't flick or wince or whatevah.... Eeestinctively? Ah know 'dis is mah own reflection... and Ah took it in strade (stride).

And so, Ah lingered there, in front of the mirror, checking mahself out carefully bafawre Ah finally jumped back down again.

[There is a big mirror close to the dining room table. He did not act like a typically spooked cat - at all.]

:)))

Too Much of a Goog Thang

Mom came owt of the keeetchen tonaight as Ah waus hanging around further bah... And Ah saw her stoop down, holding some thang.

Next thang Ah knew, Ah got a really strong whiff of this smell ....This smell that just wausn't supposed to be!!

Ah jumped and ran like a bullet clear out to the other end and then some.. Ah ran into a circle like a maniac!! 'Dis smell just isn't right and it's offending me!!!

Ah ran down and told Pipi to be careful of this thang.. So Pipi caught up with mom just a beet later. She saw mom holding the same thang still, and in spite of her cawndition? .. She took heed of what Ah told her and ran away.

[This 'thang' is a spray bottle of "special proprietary blend of feline pheromones". It's supposed to deter re-marking all the spots that Pipi-in-heat has marked. (And YES! She IS going to get spayed soon; just not when she's in heat.) ]

Bearing It

Mom came home tonaight and she waus especially glad to see me. She coo-cooed me and awl, and then fell on her knees where Ah was bah the lower steps to hug me.

Ah wasn't really sure Ah was ready for such a demoanstration so Ah braced mahself and got a little stiff as Ah stood there, motionless, while she hugged me and brushed her face across mine... and lingered.

Ah patiently stood there as the hugging lingered becoze Ah knew this is what mom needed to do... Eef she must hug me well then, let it be... Ah'll just stand there and let her, until it's awl over. Ah mean, Ah dawn't have to be eento it one hundred percent, awl the time.

You see, there are times when Ah'll go up to her awn the table, when Ah know she's beesy on the thang, and Ah'll be the one to demand her attention and drool awl over her.

So Ah'll let her take her liberties with me and smuther me awl over this time.

"What In the Hell?"

We had visitors this past Saturday for dinner and I knew that both Gabriel and Princess would go and hide, as usual, somewhere deep in my bedroom where they consider it safe.

Well, they haven't had to hide for that long before. The 'visitors' stayed for several hours in all and Gabriel got curious after a while and decided he was going to investigate - cautiously.

He came halfway down the stairs from the bedroom and stood there, behind the railing, to see who were these people talking awn and awn...so loudly. He seemed a little put off, of course, as this was clearly an unusual intrusion into his territory.

At some point, the male friend sitting next to me got up and went out to the deck for a smoke, along with another guest. Gabriel got even more curious, especially after hearing more commotion and laughter from that direction. Hesitantly, very cautiously, he took a few more steps down and began to slowly stretch his neck as far out as he could. He stood, suspended in that pose for a good while.

At that point, my other guest was watching him in delight, discovering how this cat has the ability to be so ... expressive in his behavior. And so, my guest took the liberty to interpret verbally what Gabriel was thinking:

"What in the HELL? " .....

:))))

[For those of you who are not yet familiar with Gabriel and his antics, this is a common theme with him.. I have taken video, trying to capture that look in his face, using my own voiceover "What in the hale?"... And so, this was now duplicated by a totally independent observer... ALL on their OWN! ]

A Cat Fit

Ah waus layin' nearbah mom this afternoon, right awn her bed with Pipi on the uther side.

Awl waus going well, as usual; we were awl happily bonding together, snoozing away. Naw, you awl know what a sturdy and easy going cat Ah can be. Ah mean, Ah dawn't even laike to be called "not nice" (!) Ah make the necessary adjustments.

But Ah have a very sensitive, ... jumpy side to mahself, too. Ah am very sensitive to sudden sights or noises, you see.

And Ah believe Ah SAW something. Something that was ameeess. Out of the corner of mah eye. Mom had her back to me, layin' in bed when 'dis happened.

Ah gawt SO startled, Ah couldn't thank straight. Mah immediate, eenstinctive reaction was to take cover. Take cover bah jumping directly awn mom, for good measure.

... Ah jumped right on her back, full force. Unfortunately, mah claws were also out, in their eeenstinctive state.

"Ahhh!!! What in the hell??!! ", Ah heard her say, startled herself. Ah then jumped right back to mah spot, embarrassed. There waus nuthing there, behand her but Ah kept looking, a little spooked for sure. And then Pipi rose from her sleeping position and looked right at me, standing nose to nose, trying to figure out what had happened. Ah looked over mom's wah, becoze that's where Ah thought Ah had seen somethin'.

Pipi decided it waus awl too much and jumped down from the bed altogether. But Ah remained, calmed down, while Ah had managed to spook mom herself...

...Totally embarrassing..

My Cat Has Good Taste

Gabriel has perched himself again on top of the coffee table close to the stereo and speaker as soon as I began playing an old album.

This cat has taste: He's listening to Jean Luke Ponty, "Imaginary Voyage".

Big Game

Mom came home tonaight and she brought in a whole bunch of those bags that Pipi's so scared of, they make that crunchy noise and awl. But she always stops at the last meenute because she realizes that her 'nummy num' is in there somewhere.

Anywah, mom went "upstairs" to the kitchen and got busy right away. Awl those bags were left down there, "downstairs".

And the door was left open to the forbidden place ... the place where mom always comes from, outsade. This waus mah chance. There was no way Pipi waus gonna hold me back, no warnin' she tried to tale me... Ah cawnvinced her to just stay bah the door to be the lookout.

So Ah ventured through the door to see what awl was out there, see what Ah could fand, what Ah could discover and explore. And explore Ah deed.. Ah found plenty. Ah found this dark thang just waiting for me to grab it with mah mouth, it pretty much looked to me laike it might've bean alive.

Next thang Ah know, mom is at the door [and I see his orange butt bobbing away at the back of the car in the -closed-garage].

Ah quickly disappeared from her sight, went the uther wah and then made it back to the door bafawre she could see me.

"Googie!! What did you DO?!!", Pipi urged me. "She's right there! She's gonna see you!" Ah turned around while still bah the door and mom was looking right at me. Ah still had mah big game in mah mouth and waus looking for a good place to plop it down when Ah realized that mom was after it too. Ah mean, the moment she saw me with the thang hanging from mah mouth, she wanted it so badly, she just charged at me and tried to get it!!

Aw, NO!! Nawwww! You ain't gonna git this out of mah mouth, it's MINE. She reached over at me again but Ah ran upstairs and out of her reach. Ah could hear her scream after me, yelling "NO! NO!", but Ah wouldn't have any. This thang? Was MINE, and nobody's gonna take it away from me. This is mah first big game.

Ah kept it dangling from mah mouth while evading mom's reach every time. Ah ran awl the way "upstairs", under the [desk], then ran to her room, and awl the while she'd be just within a leetle space within reach but Ah kept escaping.

Ah finally went downstairs under the big thang in the main room [under the dining table] for cover. And Ah ate it.

She came down just after Ah had finished it off. "WHAT did you DO?!!!.. Ahhhh!!! ", she screamed. Ah waus no longer so keen to escape her naw. Ah just bounced over to the kitchen and went to the corner and sat down. The deed was done and Ah waus just gonna get out of her way and face the music awl at once. "You're gonna get SICK!", she screamed at me.
That's awkay - just don't take mah big game away from me.

Ah hung out bah the kitchen floor like nuthing happened. And then when mom went to do whatever she does on the thang [computer], Ah decided Ah waus gonna make mah approach. But she flicked her head abruptly at me, and we made eye contact. Intense eye contact, Ah might admeet. Ah suddenly stopped mah stride, mah eyes got bigger, as Ah quickly studied her face. Nope, this is steel nawt a good time. Ah'm gonna gingerly pass on bah, and let 'er cool down a little more.

[He's now plopped on the other side of my laptop -- but is not trying to ingratiate himself by rubbing his face to mine like usual.]

[Gabriel forayed into the closed garage space while I still had groceries to bring in from the car and found an old brown crunchy leaf. I suppose I gave it more value by attempting to take it out of his mouth.]

Ah Don't Respond To Mindlessness

Ah waus layin' around on mom's bed the uther morning when Ah realized that something was ameess...

It seems she wanted something from me but Ah couldn't tale what it waus... Perturbed, Ah looked around me and flinched a little but Ah didn't budge.

Next thang Ah knew, mom starts tapping mah butt with a piece of those papers Ah see awl the time.. [a magazine]. "Come on!.. ", she kept saying. Well Ah beg your pardon.. Ah didn't know what it waus she wanted, steel. So Ah kept on mah spot.

"EXCUSE me", she intonated then.

Oh. Huh - Well, in that case Ah'll just get up and get awn mah way. That's awl you had to say.

-- Ah dawn't respond to mindless tactics like patting on my butt with a paper. Ah only understand "excuse me".

My Cat Likes Coldplay

Was playing the classic 2002 Coldplay album this evening while I was cooking and Gabriel, my male cat, decided he was going to climb on top of the living room coffee table - close to the music - to listen.

He almost never does that on his own unless I'm nearby, resting on the couch - which I haven't done for months.

Hmmm... and now, now that the music has stopped he keeps looking at the stereo... I guess, waiting for it to start again.

-- Excuse me while I go cater to his highness!!
